UAMS Hosts Oncology Update

January 17, 2012 | By Billy Parrish

A trip to the movies, with a large bag of popcorn. Breaks for ice cream. Dinner afterwards at a great restaurant, with new friends. Perfect weather. Opportunity to learn from the best in the state.

Sound like a great day? The UAMS College of Medicine Departments of Surgery and Family and Preventive Medicine and the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute can take credit, except maybe for the great weather.

Primary care physicians flocked to the Chenal 9 IMAX Theatre to learn the latest in oncology at the Oncology Update for the Primary Care Physician conference on Friday, January 13.

Physicians from across the state assembled at this creative new venue to learn from UAMS leaders in cancer control. The goal of this conference was to educate primary care physicians on issues related to breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer and lymphatic cancer while discussing the multidisciplinary aspect of oncology cancer treatments. The audience was mostly family practice physicians, internal medicine physicians, obstetrics and gynecologists and various allied health professions.

Physicians were instructed on how to describe evidence-based standard of care for breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, and lymphatic cancer, including identifying disease symptoms, treatment, therapeutic recommendations, and referral indications. They learned to employ collaborative practice in the treatment of patients and outlined their role in cancer treatment to ensure patient centered care.

The topics discussed: Abnormal Chest X-Rays by Matthew Steliga, MD; Breast Lumps and Breast Pain by V. Suzanne Klimberg, MD; Abnormal Pap Smear and Prevention by Pamela JB Stone, MD; Abnormal Lymph Nodes by Issam Makhoul, MD; Colorectal Disease by Jason S. Mizell, MD; and Abdominal Lumps and Bumps by Brian Badgwell, MD.
