SUMMARY:NIH State-of-the-Science Conference:
DESCRIPTION:December 5 - 7, 2011 NIH State-of-the-Science Conference: Role of Active Surveillance in the Management of Men with Localized prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the United States. Most prostate cancers are not aggressive at diagnosis and unlikely to become life-threatening. However, 90% of patients receive immediate treatment for prostate cancer, such as surgery or radiation therapy. In many patients, these treatments have substantial short- and long-term side effects without offering any clinical benefit. Currently, clinicians rely on two observational strategies as alternatives to immediate treatment of early-stage prostate cancer: watchful waiting and active surveillance. Yet, it is unclear which men will most benefit from each approach. To better understand the benefits and risks of active surveillance and watchful waiting, the National Institutes of Health has engaged in a rigorous assessment of the available scientific evidence. This process will culminate in the December conference. Natcher Conference Center Bethesda, MD Can’t attend in person? Register for the webcast and/or pre-order the statement at http://consensus-nih. org/omar-public/conferences/aspc/ cannotattend.aspx.

SUMMARY:Hope Hike – Arkansas Ovarian Cancer Coalition
DESCRIPTION:October 2, 2011 Join us for Hope Hike 2011, the Lisette C. Johnson Memorial Hike for Ovarian Cancer Education and Research. Organized in Central Arkansas’s Pinnacle Valley area and supported by Arkansas Ovarian Cancer Coalition and Partners for Pinnacle, Inc., Hope Hike was created to bring attention to this silent killer. Lisette C. Johnson was an avid hiker who loved to share the beauty of Pinnacle Mountain and local area outdoor adventures with others. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and died in 2008.  Shortly after Lisette’s death, her friend and hiking buddy, Ellen Lowitz was hiking the mountain’s trails and had the idea for a memorial fund-raising hike in Lisette’s memory at the place they both loved ... Pinnacle Mountain State Park. 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. Pinnacle Mountain State Park Check-in and welcoming ceremony will be held at Park’s West Summit Pavilion. SUMMARY:World No Tobacco Day
DESCRIPTION:The World Health Organization hosts World No Tobacco Day every year on May 31. The event encourages people to quit tobacco for one day, in hope they will quit for good. Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide, and many people are affected by tobacco – from children and youth, to adults and expectant mothers – but with the right tools, we can provide support to those who want to quit the addiction. Distribute the materials below at your World No Tobacco Day event: Spread the word to expectant mothers: http://news.sosenews.com/index.php/2011/05/06/smoking-cessation-pregnancy-program/ Take out tobacco in any form: http://smokelessisntharmless.com/ Support Clean air for all Arkansans: http://www.cleartheairarkansas.com/ The Arkansas Tobacco Quitline is also a valuable tool, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Encourage tobacco users in your community to call 1-800-QUIT-NOW to get the help they need.  It is estimated by 2030 tobacco use could cause 8 million deaths annually. Stamp Out Smoking will be happy to post a summary of your event and photos on their website or in the next e-newsletter. You can submit materials to Miriam.Karanja@arkansas.gov. Please keep SOS informed about how you promote World NO Tobacco Day in your area.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2010 Komen Arkansas Race for the Cure! Details regarding registration and event activities can be found at http://www.komenarkansas.org/komen-race-for-the-cure/. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. Since its inception in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a global series of more than 120 Races with more than 1 million people expected to participate in 2010. Up to 75 percent of the funds raised at the Race remain here in Arkansas to provide breast health research, diagnostics, screening, treatment, services and education for uninsured or underinsured women.  The remaining 25 percent goes to fund national research to discover the causes of breast cancer and, ultimately, its cures.
