The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the leading national public health institute of the United States. The CDC is afederal agency under the Department of Health and Human Services and is headquartered in unincorporated DeKalb County, Georgia, a few miles northeast of the Atlanta city limits.[1][2][3]

Its main goal is to protect public health and safety through the control and prevention of disease, injury, and disability. The CDC focuses national attention on developing and applying disease control and prevention. It especially focuses its attention on infectious diseasefood borne pathogensenvironmental healthoccupational safety and healthhealth promotioninjury prevention and educational activities designed to improve the health of United States citizens. In addition, the CDC researches and provides information on non-infectious diseases such as obesity and diabetes and is a founding member of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes.[4]

Service Provided:  The agency’s primary mission and responsibility is to regulate the sale of tobacco in the State of Arkansas and enforce all laws pertaining to tobacco. The agency regulates tobacco manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. Our job is to serve these businesses by helping them be aware of all the laws governing tobacco sales in Arkansas and to serve the citizens of our state in the process. An important role the agency plays is enforcing the tobacco sales to minor prohibition. This is done through free training provided to merchants, educational efforts and undercover operations that determine if retailers are complying with the law and protecting our youngest citizens. Currently, Arkansas’ sale to minor violation rate is one of the lowest in the nation.

The Arkansas Public Health Association was organized on Saturday morning, November 22, 1947, in the Lecture Room of the Robinson Memorial Auditorium, Markham and Broadway Streets, Little Rock, Arkansas. This organizational meeting of APHA was held on the third day of the Annual Conference of the Arkansas State Board of Health. The Annual Conferences were held in part to fulfill the state law requirement that the State Health Officer speak to the employees of the State Board of Health at least once each year.

The Arkansas Public Health Association (APHA) is an affiliate of the American Public Health Association, Inc., and the Southern Health Association. The membership of the Arkansas Public Health Association is made up of individuals from public health disciplines as well as persons interested in the advancement of public health. The Association is organized and shall be operated for the following purposes:a) To promote and protect the public health; b) To aid in the promulgation and enforcement of State and local legislation in the interest of public health; c) To render service and assistance in time of public emergency and necessity; d) To bring into closer association persons and organizations for the purpose of aiding in the promotion of public health; e) To do and perform such other acts and services as are deemed to be in the interest of the public health and welfare; and f) To promote and assist in training and education in the field of Public Health.
